W.M. Keck Foundation: Science & Engineering and Medical Research Programs - Concept Paper Fall 2023

UA may submit one concept paper in Physical Sciences and Engineering and one concept paper in Medical Sciences in this cycle.
The selected projects must participate in the concept counseling session with the W.M. Keck Foundation between July 1 and August 15 to determine if they can proceed to the Phase I submission.

The W.M. Keck Foundation Research Program uses a three-step process for this opportunity. The first step is a Concept paper. The Undergraduate Education program is currently not accepting concept papers. The next steps are by the foundation’s invitation. UArizona review criteria reflect previous interactions with the W.M. Keck Foundation. Proposals should focus on basic, fundamental science with broad applications.

The proposed work should show a significant leap forward rather than an extension of existing work.  

To be considered by Keck, applicants must have a statement from a federal program officer expressing that the project is not a good fit due to risk (rather than technical or theoretical fit) or a decline from a federal program where the summary statement or individual reviews highlight the incredible novelty, but the high-risk nature that makes it difficult to fund at the federal level.

The Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program (MRI Program Website) serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training in our Nation's institutions of higher education and not-for-profit scientific/engineering research organizations. An MRI award supports the acquisition of a multi-user research instrument that is commercially available through direct purchase from a vendor, or for the personnel costs and equipment that are required for the development of an instrument with new capabilities, thereby advancing instrumentation capabilities and enhancing expertise for instrument design and fabrication at academic institutions. MRI instruments are, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.

MRI provides support to acquire critical research instrumentation without which advances in fundamental science and engineering research may not otherwise occur. MRI also provides support to obtain next-generation research instruments by developing instruments with new capabilities that open new opportunities to advance the frontiers in science and engineering research. Additionally, an MRI award is expected to enhance research training of students who will become the next generation of instrument users, designers and builders.

An MRI proposal may request from NSF up to $4 million for either acquisition or development of a research instrument. Each performing organization may submit in revised "Tracks" as defined below, with no more than two (2) submissions in Track 1 and no more than one (1) submission in Track 2For the newly defined Track 3, no more than one (1) submission per competition is permitted.  As a result, it is now possible for an institution to submit up to four MRI proposals within the Track limits as described above.

  • Track 1: Track 1 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than $100,000[1] and less than $1,400,000.
  • Track 2: Track 2 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $1,400,000 up to and including $4,000,000.
  • Track 3: Track 3 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $100,000[1] and less than or equal to $4,000,000 that include the purchase, installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment and instrumentation to conserve or reduce the consumption of helium. Track 3 is an institutionally coordinated submission and won't be part of the internal competition.

Cost sharing requirements for new awards in the MRI Program are waived for a period of 5 years beginning with the FY 2023 MRI competition. Institutional submission limits for Track 1, Track 2 and Track 3 proposals remain.

The MRI Program especially seeks broad representation of groups, institutions, and geographic regions that are underrepresented in STEM disciplines. Proposals from women, underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities and early-career PIs are encouraged, as are proposals that benefit early-career researchers and proposals with PIs from geographically underserved regions, including EPSCoR jurisdictions. Additionally, proposals are encouraged from under-resourced institutions, including from emerging research institutions, where MRI can significantly build capacity for research

The Nurse Education, Practice, Quality and Retention (NEPQR)-Simulation Education Training (SET) program aims to enhance nursing education and practice with the use of simulation-based technology to advance the health of patients and families in the acute care setting to improve health outcomes. This program also intends to increase and strengthen the capacity student nurses from diverse backgrounds, (including underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities) to address the complex health care needs of populations for patient safety outcomes and improve health equity and health literacy of vulnerable and underserved populations.

HRSA HRSA-23-009: 2023 Advanced Nursing Education Nurse Practitioner Residency and Fellowship (ANE-NPRF) Program

The purpose of this program is to prepare new Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to effectively provide primary care by supporting the establishment, expansion and/or enhancement of existing community-based Nurse Practitioner (NP) residency and fellowship training programs that are accredited or in the accreditation process. The program also focuses on the integration of behavioral health and/or maternal health into primary care by training new primary care providers (adult, family, adult gerontology, pediatric and women’s health NPs), behavioral health providers (psychiatric/mental health NPs) and/or Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) to transition from education completion to practice, in community-based settings. The applicant must train these postgraduate APRNs who will serve in primary care settings with a focus on improving access to quality healthcare for rural, urban, and tribal underserved populations.

Program Goals

1. Support expansion or enhancement of primary care NP residency programs.

2. Increase the number of new primary care, behavioral health and maternal health NPs serving in rural, urban, and tribal underserved community-based settings.

3. Integrate behavioral health and maternal health care into community-based primary care NP residency programs.

 

 

Program Objectives

• Support new primary care providers through the establishment, expansion, or enhancement of NP residency programs in community-based settings.

• Strengthen the clinical competency and readiness for practice of new primary care NPs through didactic and clinical training that equips participants with the skills and knowledge to provide care for the complex co-morbidities and multi-level chronic health and social needs of communities. • Increase access to quality primary care providers through the placement of residency completers in rural, urban, and tribal underserved community-based settings.

• Expand academic practice partnerships to provide learning opportunities which integrate primary care, behavioral health and maternal health domains of practice. These partnerships should promote health equity, improve diversity of the workforce to address the needs of the populations they serve, and address workforce wellness and resiliency. USDA USDA-NIFA-WAMS-008782: 2023 Women and Minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Fields (WAMS)

UArizona can submit two proposals to this funding program. 

The purpose of this program is to support research, education/teaching, and extension projects that increase participation by women and underrepresented minorities from rural areas in STEM. NIFA intends this program to address educational needs within broadly defined areas of food and agricultural sciences. Applications recommended for funding must highlight and emphasize the development of a competent and qualified workforce in the food and agricultural sciences. WAMS-funded projects improve the economic health and viability of rural communities by developing research and extension initiatives that focus on new and emerging employment opportunities in STEM occupations. Projects that contribute to the economic viability of rural communities are also encouraged.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH.  The overarching goal of this NHGRI R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs.     

To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on  Curriculum Development. This NHGRI R25 program offers to support the development of curricula for Master of Science (M.S.) degree programs in genomics, genomic medicine and/or genomic informatics for medical students.

 Specifically, this FOA will support the development of curriculum designed to be freely available, at no cost to the broader community to enhance training in genomics for medical students.

2024 Pew Biomedical Scholars

The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The program makes grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in their first few years of their appointment at the assistant professor level. The current grant level is $300,000; $75,000 per year for a four-year period.

Candidates must hold a doctorate in biomedical sciences, medicine, or a related field, including engineering or the physical sciences.

Based on their performance during their education and training, candidates should demonstrate outstanding promise as contributors in science relevant to human health. This program does not fund clinical trials research. Strong proposals will incorporate particularly creative and pioneering approaches to basic, translational, and applied biomedical research. Candidates whose work is based on biomedical principles but who bring in concepts and theories from more diverse fields are encouraged to apply.

2024 Searle Scholars Program

Due to the competitive nature of this funding program, this selection process is running with an anticipated deadline.
We will keep all applicants informed of relevant updates in the guidelines, submission deadlines, and eligibility as soon as more information becomes available.

The Searle Scholars Program supports research of outstanding individuals who have recently begun their appointment at the assistant professor level, and whose appointment is their first tenure-track position at a participating academic or research institution. Today, 168 institutions are invited to participate in the Program.

The Program was established at The Chicago Community Trust in 1980 and has been administered by Kinship Foundation since 1996. The Program is funded from the estates of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Searle. Mr. Searle was the grandson of the founder of the world-wide pharmaceutical company, G.D. Searle & Company. It was Mr. Searle's wish that certain funds be used to support "...research in medicine, chemistry, and the biological sciences."

Each year 15 new individuals are named Searle Scholars. Awards are currently set at $100,000 per year for three years. Since its inception, 617 Scholars have been named and over $174 million has been awarded.

The Searle Scholars Program Scientific Advisory Board is primarily interested in the potential of applicants to make innovative and high-impact contributions to research over an extended period of time. 

Applicants for the 2024 competition (awards which will be activated on July 1, 2024) are expected to be pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences

Applicants should have begun their appointment as an independent investigator at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2022. The appointment must be their first tenure-track position (or its nearest equivalent) at an invited institution. 

Institutions which do not have tenure-track appointments should consult with the Scientific Director of the Program regarding eligibility of selected applicants PRIOR to nominating such individuals. 

The Searle Scholars Program does not ordinarily support purely clinical research but has supported research programs that include both clinical and basic components. Potential applicants who are unsure if their research is appropriate for our Program are encouraged to examine the research interests of present and former Searle Scholars on this website. 

Applicants who were nominated for awards in the previous competition year but were not awarded may still meet the eligibility criteria for the current competition. Institutions should consult with the Scientific Director of the Program regarding renomination of such individuals.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research educational activities that complement other formal training programs in the mission areas of the NIH Institutes and Centers. 

The overarching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the NIH, provides global leadership for research, training, and education programs to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood diseases, and sleep disorders and enhance the health of all individuals so that they can live longer and more fulfilling lives. The NHLBI expects efforts to diversify the workforce to lead to the recruitment of researchers from all groups, improve the quality of the educational and training environment, balance and broaden the perspective in setting research priorities, improve the ability to recruit subjects from diverse backgrounds into clinical research protocols, and improve the Nation's capacity to address and eliminate health disparities.

The overarching goal of this National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) R25 program is to support mentoring and research education activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce. The major goal of this R25 program is to establish long-term mentoring that will enable junior faculty and transitioning postdoctoral students from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences (see, e.g., NOT-OD-20-031), to develop a research program and work with their home institution to obtain NIH funding. This FOA specifically invites applications that would support senior faculty, established researchers, and experienced mentors to develop and direct the Summer Institutes for Programs to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE) in order to mentor promising eligible junior faculty and transitioning postdoctoral students from diverse backgrounds who have specific scientific interests in heart, lung, blood and sleep (HLBS) disorders research.

To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support educational activities with a primary focus on Research Experiences and Mentoring Activities (described below):

  • Research Experiences for participating junior faculty and transitioning postdoctoral students from diverse backgrounds to enhance their research skills, experiences, and knowledge base relative to HLBS scientific areas and cross-cutting methodological approaches. This can include transitioning postdoctoral scientists who have received a formal full-time faculty appointment letter in hand and will have completed their postdoctoral appointment by the time the Summer Institute program to which they are recruited is convened.   
  • Mentoring Activities by senior faculty, established researchers, and experienced mentors that include dedicated efforts to provide technical expertise, career advice, insight, and professional skills development opportunities to participating junior faculty and transitioning postdoctoral students from diverse backgrounds so that they can work with their institutions to compete for NIH grantss successfully.

Research education programs may complement ongoing research training and education occurring at the applicant institution, but the proposed educational experiences must be distinct from those training and education programs currently receiving Federal support. R25 programs may augment institutional research training programs (e.g., T32, T90) but cannot be used to replace or circumvent Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) programs.

2023 Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering

The Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering allow the nation's most promising early career professors to pursue their science and engineering research with few funding restrictions and limited paperwork requirements. The Foundation invites the presidents of 50 universities to nominate two early-career professors each from their institutions. Nominations are carefully reviewed by the Fellowship Advisory Panel, comprised of distinguished scientists and engineers. 20 recipients will receive individual grants of $875,000 distributed over five years. Of the $175,000 paid each year, $17,500 is available to the university as compensation for administrative costs.

Packard Fellows are inquisitive, passionate scientists and engineers who take a creative approach to their research, dare to think big, and follow new ideas wherever they lead. The Fellowships for Science and Engineering program invests in future leaders who have the freedom to take risks, explore new frontiers in their fields of study, and follow uncharted paths that may lead to groundbreaking discoveries.The Foundation emphasizes support for innovative individual research that involves the Fellows, their students, and junior colleagues, rather than extensions or components of large-scale, ongoing research program.
 

Eligibility: 

  • Candidates must be faculty members who are eligible to serve as principal investigators engaged in research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering and must be in the first three years of their faculty careers, that is, whose initial faculty appointments began no earlier than May 31, 2020, and no later than May 31, 2023.
  • Disciplines that will be considered include physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering. Candidates engaged in research in the social sciences will not be considered.

Ineligible areas

The Foundation recognizes that certain areas of contemporary science and engineering already have access to relatively generous funding (for example, clinical research, research associated with the design and construction of large national facilities such as accelerators and space stations and applied research of direct relevance to national security), the Packard Fellowships are directed to other, less generously supported fields.
