Department of Energy Research Security Training Requirement

The Department of Energy (DOE) now requires all Covered Individuals complete Research Security Training and certify completion in their Current and Pending Support disclosure. This training must be completed within 12 months before submitting a DOE research and development proposal.

You can find the required training modules here: Research Security Training | NSF - National Science Foundation

Who is a Covered Individual?

Anyone who:

Contributes meaningfully to a DOE-funded or proposed project, and/or

Is designated as a Covered Individual by DOE.

At minimum, this includes PIs, Co-PIs, project managers, and others in similar roles—even if their official title is different. Graduate students, postdocs, and consultants may also be considered Covered Individuals if they meet the above criteria.

What faculty need to do:

  • Complete the federally provided training (approx. 4 hours – The Research Security Program will provide an update when a condensed version of the training is available.)
  • Submit a copy of their certificates here: ReSec Training Certificate Submission

As DOE has acknowledged, "DOE’s research security training application requirement is different and distinct from the forthcoming Research Security Program requirements described in" OSTP's July 9, 2024 Guidelines for Research Security Programs at Covered Institutions.
