The Animal Welfare Program (AWP) oversees animal activity at The University of Arizona and serves as the administrative and regulatory support for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC is charged with the protection of animal research and teaching subjects and is responsible for reviewing and approving all activities utilizing vertebrate animals for research, teaching and testing, ensuring compliance with federal animal welfare regulations, inspecting animal facilities and investigator laboratories, investigating animal concerns, and overseeing training and educational programs.

- Surgical and Non-surgical Record Templates Updates! We have updated our surgical record and non-surgical anesthesia record templates. Check them out on the "IACUC & AWP Forms, Signs & Labels" page.
- For all surgical and non-surgical anesthesia procedures over 15 minutes, records must include monitoring of the animals every 15 minutes. This must be documented on the records.
- Record templates can be modified to fit each lab's needs, but must include the required information.
- If you have questions or want the AWP to review your records, please reach out to us! We would be happy to help ensure they meet all IACUC requirements.
- Semi-annual Inspections: UAC Facility and Farm locations will be inspected July 20-24, 2026. We will be scheduling inspections mid June. - Office hours: The Animal Welfare Program offers virtual office hours. They are available as follows:
- Virtual: Every 3rd Thursday, 10 - 11 am, except breaks/holidays, via Zoom. No need to sign up.
