NIH Person-first and Destigmatizing Language Style Guide

Resource Type
Format
Creator/Author
NIH
Description
The NIH Style Guide is a glossary for person first language, including for proposals with human participants, community collaborators, ways of articulating diseases and health conditions, and preferences for race, ethnicity, sex, gender, and other terms. For grant and funding proposals, always defer to the actual funding opportunity announcement, SF424 for that NIH grant series, and the NIH formatting for grant pages. Formatting for NIH grants is specific and differs from the style guide formatting for other materials. We include the style guide for nuanced language about people.
