The Research Development Services (RDS) team is committed to supporting faculty and staff through a shifting research landscape. With deep expertise and dedication to partnership, RDS specialists help researchers navigate evolving expectations, identify strategic opportunities, and move their projects forward with clarity and confidence.

A specialist in biomedical sciences, Alice Solomon primarily supports NIH proposals and health sciences faculty. A PhD candidate in molecular medicine, she understands the stresses of proposal development. “I want to use my background to help faculty feel confident in the process,” she says. With recent federal changes and uncertainties around renewals, Solomon sees her role as an equal guide and partner. “We don’t have all the answers,” she says, “but if faculty know we’re on their side, we can get through this together.” She often helps researchers explore alternative funding mechanisms when traditional routes feel unstable, offering direction and encouragement along the way.

Solomon’s advice is direct: “If the opportunity is up, apply. Don’t count yourself out—and reach out for support.”

Danielle Barefoot, associate for international research development, supports proposals that include international components and serves as the university’s Fulbright Scholar liaison. A first-generation Pell Grant recipient with extensive research experience abroad, Barefoot brings empathy and a global perspective to her work. One faculty member remarked that “[she] was crucial as we developed a project between institutions in the US, Germany, and the UK, ensuring our proposal remained consistent and unified in voice.” She frequently connects faculty with campus partners, assists with MOUs and agreements, and curates opportunities aligned with researchers’ interests.

“International research can be transformative,” Barefoot says. “Keep your mind open to the possibilities that might benefit your project, collaborations, and the students and postdoctoral associates whom you mentor.”
