The University of Arizona is committed to protecting the health and safety of its faculty, staff, and students. We recognize that some research requires the use of potentially pathogenic microorganisms, other biological materials, genetically modified organisms (GMO), and organisms containing recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules.

To ensure the safe use of these organisms, the University requires compliance with applicable federal, state, University, and other regulations.  Research Laboratory & Safety Services (RLSS) collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to promote the safe and responsible conduct of research. In addition, our staff works to protect researchers, the public, and the environment by providing direction, resources, and training regarding the safe handling of hazardous biological materials in the laboratory.

The UA Biosafety Plan contains the rules and regulations for the safe use of recombinant and biohazardous material at the University of Arizona.
