Limited Submissions Calendar

A number of external funding programs limit the number of applications the University of Arizona may submit.  If you would like to be considered for a limited solicitation opportunity, please submit a pre-proposal to your college Dean prior to the internal deadlines listed below. Please review eligibility requirements carefully. If you identify a program that we have not listed that limits submissions, or if you have questions about any of the limited solicitations listed below, please contact Research Development Services.

Please note that proposals to private foundations may require clearance through the University of Arizona Foundation.

2/12/20 update: 2020 guidelines have been posted and the internal deadline has been extended until 2/26/20. UA may nominate one applicant per College. Applicants must have received their terminal degree within seven years of submitting their application. The Foundation calculates this by adding seven years to the date the doctoral degree was conferred. In medicine, the seven-year maximum is dated from the completion of the first residency. Applicants must be employed in career-ladder positions. For many applicants, this means holding a tenure-track position. The award may not be used as a post-doctoral fellowship.Education: T. 2021 (HEI) High-End Instrumentation Grant Program (S10 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) NIH Grants 03/17/2021

06/01/2021

UA may submit more than one application.

There is no restriction on the number of applications an institution can submit to the SIG and/or High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Programs each year, provided the applications request different types of equipment. To prevent duplication of applications, this opportunity is Institutionally Coordinated.

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to continue the High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Grant Program administered by the Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP). The objective of the Program is to make available to institutions high-end cutting-edge research instruments that can only be justified on a shared-use basis and that are needed for NIH-supported projects in basic, translational, and clinical biomedical or biobehavioral research. The HEI program provides funds to purchase or upgrade a single item of expensive, leading-edge, specialized, commercially available instrument or an integrated instrumentation system. An integrated instrumentation system is one in which the components, when used in conjunction with one another, perform a function that no single component can provide. The components must be dedicated to the system and not used independently.Types of supported instruments include, but are not limited to: X-ray diffractometers, mass spectrometers, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers, DNA and protein sequencers, biosensors, electron and light microscopes, cell sorters, high throughput robotic screening systems, and biomedical imagers. Applications for standalone computer systems (supercomputers, computer clusters and data storage systems) will only be considered if the system is solely dedicated to biomedical research.

2021 (SIG) Shared Instrumentation Grant Program (S10 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grants 03/17/2021

06/01/2021

UA may submit more than one application.

There is no restriction on the number of applications an institution can submit to the SIG and/or High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Programs each year, provided the applications request different types of equipment. To prevent duplication of applications, this opportunity is Institutionally Coordinated. Applications will be accepted that request a single, commercially available instrument or an integrated instrumentation system. The minimum award is $50,000. There is no upper limit on the cost of the instrument, but the maximum award is $600,000. Since the cost of various instruments will vary, it is anticipated that the amount of the award will also vary. S10 awards do not allow indirect costs.

2021 Beckman Young Investigators Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation 07/26/2021

08/02/2021

UArizona may submit more than one application; however, the LOI process is Institutionally Coordinated.

For PIs interested in submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Beckman Young Investigators Program (BYI), please follow the steps below and e-mail the LOI to Sponsored Projects & Contracting Services (SPCS) by Monday, July 26th, 2021, for Institutional Endorsement from the Chief Academic Officer.

  • Principal Investigator (PI) completes the Online Application, uploads all required documentation
  • The PI or their Department creates a complete, single PDF of the LOI, including content printed from the Beckman application portal after Dean’s endorsement and all uploaded attachments. Forward the single PDF via e-mail to sponsor@email.arizona.edu with the subject "Beckman Young Investigator LOI for Endorsement." Redact sensitive information (like social security numbers) as needed.
  • SPCS Proposal Services verifies LOI content and will contact eligible PIs and/or their Department by July 27th with instructions to proceed with Chief Academic Officer endorsement.
  • The Chief Academic Officer (Provost) will only endorse applications verified by SPCS as complete and eligible by the July 26th deadline.  SPCS Proposal Services will coordinate as needed with the Office of the Provost.

Please do not enter an email address for Chief Academic Officer endorsement until you have approval from SPCS Proposal Services.

Please do not contact the Office of the Provost directly regarding endorsements but communicate through Sponsored Projects & Contracting Services at sponsor@email.arizona.edu or (520) 626-6000. SPCS will work as quickly as possible to ensure they are all reviewed and endorsed by the sponsor deadline. See the Beckman Young Investigators Program website for an overview video and eligibility requirements.

2021 Brain Research Foundation Annual Scientific Innovations Award Brain Research Foundation (BRF) Grants 05/05/2021

06/24/2021

UA may submit 1 application.

Brain Research Foundation's Scientific Innovations Award Program provides funding for innovative science in both basic and clinical neuroscience. This funding mechanism is designed to support creative, exploratory, cutting-edge research in well-established research laboratories, under the direction of established investigators. The objective of the SIA is to support projects that may be too innovative and speculative for traditional funding sources but still have a high likelihood of producing important findings. It is expected that investigations supported by these grants will yield high impact findings and result in major grant applications and significant publications in high-impact journals. Funding Preferences: Funding is to be directed at projects that may be too innovative and speculative for traditional funding sources but still have a high likelihood of producing important findings. This should be a unique project for senior investigators who are encouraged to stretch their imagination into areas that can substantially change an area of research. Funding of research projects that will likely lead to successful grant applications with NIH and other public and private funding entities.

2021 Bridges to the Baccalaureate Research Training Program (T34) National Institute of General Medical Sciences 08/04/2021

09/27/2021

No applicants // Limit: 1 // Tickets Available: 1

The goal of the Bridges to the Baccalaureate Research Training Program is to provide structured activities to prepare a diverse cohort of community college students to transfer to and complete a bachelor's degree in biomedical research fields.  This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) provides support to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and implement effective, evidence-based approaches to biomedical training and mentoring that will keep pace with the rapid evolution of the research enterprise. NIGMS expects that the proposed research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, mentoring, and career development elements to prepare trainees to bridge from the community college and complete the bachelor's degree in biomedical fields.

This program requires partnerships between two-year post-secondary educational institutions granting the associate degree with four-year colleges or universities that offer the baccalaureate degree.

This FOA does not allow appointed trainees to lead an independent clinical trial but does allow them to obtain research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.
