Office of International Development

The University of Arizona (UAz) aspires to become a thought leader in confronting global development challenges by building on UAz capacities, to shape strategic programming and policy decisions, and to implement projects and activities overseas. To help the University achieve its goals, the Office of International Development (OID) was established in 2020 to increase the understanding and capacity of faculty and students to work internationally and to build stronger connections to international partners and donors with a strong focus on the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of State (DOS), but also other institutional sponsors of international development activities.

For faculty, staff and students at UAZ, OID can help identify opportunities to participate and contribute to technical and policy discussions on critical global issues, identify and develop strategic partnerships with external partners, track and identify relevant funding opportunities, advise and support the development of proposal submissions and provide technical assistance and management support during the implementation of projects (post-award), including project start-up, compliance and reporting, client relations, monitoring and evaluation, and project close-out.

For external partners or individuals, OID serves as a one-stop shop for engagement with UAz on international development activities, ensuring a seamless and efficient process for partnership on project and funding opportunities. OID, in collaboration with Arizona Institutes for Resilience (AIR) International Programs, maintains a network of faculty, staff and students with interest and expertise relevant international development and facilitates the identification and engagement of relevant technical experts. OID also develops and provides relevant documentation such as capacity statements, past performance records, budgets and other documents required for proposals.

OID, led by Executive Director Eric Bergthold brings decades of international development expertise in business development and project implementation, working with a range of implementing partners as well as experience working for and with donors like USAID, USDOS, the United Nations, World Bank, World Food Program, Asian Development Bank, private companies, foundations and others.
