RLSS Training

University of Arizona Faculty, Staff, Students, Affiliates, and Designated Campus Colleagues

The Approval Holder (AH) or Approval Safety Coordinator (ASC) must request individuals to be added to their lab by sending an invitation thru the RLSS User Dashboard

or send an email to rlss-help@email.arizona.edu with the following information:

  • Worker’s Legal Name
  • Official work email address
  • Approval Name and Number
  • Type of approval (Biosafety, Chemical, Radioactive Material, Laser, ect..)

The worker, AH, and ASC will be notified of their status throughout the process.

Appropriate training is required for all individuals that work with and/or supervise the use of recombinant and biohazardous material. The Biosafety Protection Courses are an annual requirement. Annual refresher courses can be taken online. You can see the status of your training by logging into the User Dashboard.

Basic Biosafety Protection Course* - required for all personnel working with BSL-1 or BSL-2 agents.

Plant Hazard Protection Course - required for research involving transgenic plants, plant pathogens, and organisms associated with plants.

BSL-3 Protection Course* - required for anyone working within a BSL-3 laboratory.

Dual Use Research of Concern Training - recommended for anyone with dual use research in the laboratory.

 

*Certification- Bloodborne Pathogens and Universal Precautions (OSHA Compliant) prerequisite required for any individual who may come in contact with bloodborne pathogen.

Appropriate training is required for all individuals that work with or handle hazardous chemicals. You can see the status of your training by logging into the User Dashboard.

General Laboratory Chemical Safety Course (GLCSC)* - required for all personnel working with or handling hazardous chemicals.

Highly Hazardous Gas Training - recommended for all personnel working with or handling highly hazardous gases.

Cryogenic Materials Safety Training - recommended for all personnel working with or handling cryogenic materials.

Pyrophoric Materials Safety Training - recommended for all personnel working pyrophoric materials.

 

Fire Safety Awareness*prerequisite required for any individual taking the General Laboratory Chemical Safety Course.

Appropriate Training is required for all individuals that work with/handle ionizing radiation. You can see the status of your training by logging into the User Dashboard.

University Animal Care Fluoroscopy Course - required for personnel and visitors who will participate in University Animal Care (UAC) procedures requiring fluoroscopy or radiography. 

Radioactive Material Protection Course - required for all research personnel working with 'free' or 'unsealed' radioactive materials. The Radioactive Material Protection Guide is available for download.

Radiation Generating Machines Protection Course - required of all personnel working with machines producing ionizing radiation, which may include x-ray diffraction and fluorescence equipment, cabinet x-ray systems, and Van de Graaff or particle accelerators.  The University of Arizona Radiation Generating Machines Reference Guide is available for download.

Sealed Source Protection Course - required for all personnel working with encapsulated sources of radioactivity other than Moisture Gauges and the Gamma Irradiator Facility. The Sealed Source Protection Reference Guide is available for download.

 
Clinical Radiation Safety Training - required for personnel who may be occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation. A refresher course is required.

Courses Available Upon Request

Gamma Irradiator Protection Course - required for all personnel who require unescorted access to gamma irradiator facilities.

  • Registration for this course occurs after a prospective user has been deemed Trustworthy & Reliable (T & R) by Research Laboratory & Safety Services.  The Gamma Irradiator Protection Reference Guide is available for download.

Moisture Gauge Protection Course - required for all research personnel working with neutron moderation technique counting devices such as a soil moisture gauge, soil density gauge, or rooftop surface hydration probe. The Moisture Gauge Protection Reference Guide is available for download.

Laser Radiation Protection Course (LRPC) - required for personnel working with regulated lasers (Class 3b and 4). The Laser Radiation Protection Guide is available for download.

The Imaging Laser Protection Course (ILPC) - required for personnel working with confocal microscopes and similar equipment.

Good Laboratory Practice Course - required for individuals who will be working in laboratories that are regulated under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A refresher course is required every two years.

Hearing Conservation Program Training - The Hearing Conservation Program Training will provide you information on the University of Arizona's Hearing Conservation Program and the importance of protecting your hearing while on-the-job. This includes information on the HCP, hazardous noise and hearing loss, noise monitoring and audiometric testing, and hearing protection devices.
